The ultimate expression of property is an independent house, or as they call it in Marbella and the remaining parts along the Costa del Sol – a villa.
Paradoxically though it may seem, a detached house means somehow going back to the origin of dwelling itself. Indeed blocks of flats or apartments are a relatively recent ‘invention’, which probably does not date back much further than the 19th century and became rather widespread in the 20th century. In the past owning an independent property, either semidetached or detached to another one, used to be normal – that’s what used to be called ‘a house’.
Blocks of flats have their origin in large towns which had a big population but space was scarce, and therefore it was essential to optimize the utilization of land through raising building height.
Apart from the city centre, which is like many other cities’, Marbella has many residential areas and developments all over the municipality. Blocks of apartments abound in many of them, though they are not very high and mostly three-floored buildings. Independent houses –the so called villas-, are also common in such resorts.
It sounds logical, and it is in fact true, that villas have a higher price than flats even if the latter are large penthouses with a similar usable area to that of a villa. However the charm and feeling of independence a villa has is something truly unique.
In the market, you can obviously find large properties at a price of many millions (up to an 8-digit number), but there are also real gems at a very reasonable price featuring all the advantages of an independent property without having to pay an outrageous price for them.
Moreover, you can also find offers of properties that are a little old but for sale at very convenient prices, and if you refurbish them properly, you can make of them beautifully designed modern properties, a real delight to be enjoyed.
So definitely not- a villa does not have to be expensive. If you wish to have an independent property, on a reasonably sized plot, in a residential area and close to all the amenities, there are interesting opportunities under 500,000€.
